Research

My research focuses on the history and archaeology of Early Iron Age and Archaic Greece, and notably the Corinthian Gulf and the Ionian Islands. I have a particular interest in Greek religion and ritual, and especially the spatial development of early Greek sanctuaries. I have also written on ethnicity, landscape studies, and pottery production, technology and use. I am currently working on a monograph on the settlement history of Ithaca which combines the results of BSA campaigns before World War II with new research conducted in collaboration with the ΛΕ' ΕΠΚΑ.
As Director, I co-edit the BSA Annual and compile the annual Archaeology in Greece bulletin for Archaeological Reports. I co-direct the School's excavations in the ancient theatre of Sparta in collaboration with the Ε' ΕΠΚΑ and 5e ΕΒΑ. I am available to advise current and prospective postgraduate students.

The Director is also Professor of Classical Archaeology at King's College London
