SUMMARY:Abbie Vickress\, "Reimagining the Narrative(s) of Contested Cultural Artefacts"
DESCRIPTION:Artist in residence event\nAbbie Vickress (University of the Arts London)\, “Reimagining the Narrative(s) of Contested Cultural Artefacts”\nAbstract: UAL Research Resident Artist Abbie Vickress will talk about the residency and the ways that this experience has evolved her PhD research on how graphic design influences the interpretation of contested cultural artefacts in museums and archives. She will discuss how design elements frame and shape visitor perception of artefacts and the political narratives surrounding them\, and the possible roles of pluralism and knowledge agency within historical institutions. \nBio: Abbie Vickress is a graphic designer\, researcher and facilitator exploring knowledge generation and distribution in public engagement and cultural spaces. This critical approach manifests through printed and interactive design\, exhibition design\, curation\, writing and facilitation of workshops and events. She is currently undertaking a Technē AHRC funded PhD in Pluralist Exhibition Design Methods: Anti-colonial graphic design in ethnographic museums with Afterall\, a Central Saint Martins\, University of the Arts London research centre exploring the value of contemporary art and its relation to wider society. Abbie teaches and guest lectures widely at HE undergraduate and postgraduate level\, and with museum learning departments. \nimage: cover of Graphic Pause courtesy of Abbie Vickress \nHybrid event \nTo attend in person in Athens\, register here \nTo attend online via webinar\, register here

SUMMARY:Ilenia Cipollari\, "Sounding the Archive: Fragments in Emily Penrose’s Own Voice. British School at Athens\, 1887–2025"
DESCRIPTION:Ilenia Cipollari performing with Musarc\, photo by Yiannis Katsaris \nArtist Researcher in Residence event\nIlenia Cipollari (BSA/University of the Arts London)\, “Sounding the Archive: Fragments in Emily Penrose’s Own Voice. British School at Athens\, 1887–2025”\nSounding the Archive is an intimate hybrid performance-lecture inspired by the travel diaries of historian Emily Penrose during her time at the British School at Athens. Blending live reading\, song\, and ambient sound\, the event re-enters Penrose’s diary fragments through embodied writing and first-person vocal reflection. Rather than presenting the archive as fixed history\, the performance unfolds through voice\, quietness\, and dialogue\, allowing Penrose’s impressions of Italy and Greece to meet present-day embodied experience. Field recordings and traditional Mediterranean vocal textures shape a sonic landscape where research\, performance\, and listening intertwine. The evening includes moments of gentle audience attunement and shared grounding\, inviting participants to experience the archive not only as a document but as a living\, resonant encounter. \nIlenia Cipollari is an Italian actor\, singer\, and researcher whose interdisciplinary practice explores the voice as an archival\, embodied\, and relational tool. She is currently undertaking a PhD at the University of the Arts London (Camberwell\, Chelsea\, Wimbledon Colleges)\, where her research investigates the intersections of gig theatre\, post-dramatic performance\, trauma-informed and body-centered methodologies\, anti-colonial and anti-racist critique\, and post-Marxist relational politics. Her doctoral work examines the voice as a site of memory\, survival\, and care — particularly in relation to sonic and archival practices. Trained in jazz vocals at the Mabellini Conservatory of Pistoia\, she has worked extensively in avant-garde theatre and early music ensembles. Since 2023\, she has been a member of Idrîsî Ensemble\, a music collective exploring unrecorded medieval repertoires through music archaeology and postcolonial historiography. Her performance work — including collaborations with Song of the Goat Theatre and Musarc — often engages with Mediterranean vocal traditions\, polyphonic chant\, and poetic movement\, seeking to activate historical and coastal narratives through sound and the body. She has presented work internationally\, including at Yale University\, LCMF\, Bold Tendencies\, and the Tbilisi International Theater Festival. Her research foregrounds the voice as a living\, performative archive that connects artists\, histories\, and audiences across time and space. \nTo attend in person in Athens\, please register HERE \nTo attend online via Zoom webinar\, please register HERE \nHybrid event

SUMMARY:BSA & the Hellenic Centre\, "Artist’s Talk by Returning Resident Joshua Whitaker: Acid History – Into the Silver Screen"
DESCRIPTION:BSA & the Hellenic Centre event\nArtist’s Talk by Returning Resident Joshua Whitaker: Acid History – Into the Silver Screen\nAbstract: A talk/performance by artist Joshua Whitaker presenting writing\, photography\, and film developed during his stay as Arts Researcher in Residence at The British School at Athens (BSA) in partnership with Camberwell\, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts at University of the Arts London. The talk will explore the BSA’s archive\, library\, and laboratory’s influence on Whitaker’s practice— each of which provided source material for a new set of photographic\, film\, and silkscreen works— as well as the concept of ‘Acid History’\, developed during the residency\, which has subsequently been presented as a paper at University of Exeter’s ‘Apocalyptic Times’ conference.  Walter Benjamin’s ideation of ‘Left Melancholy’\, religious icons\, Amiri Baraka’s unpicking of time in his short story ‘Rhythm Travel’\, Etel Adnan’s poetry\, the Delphic Oracle\, and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s script for ‘San Paolo’ will be drawn on to elaborate the concept of ‘Acid History’ as an experience of time shot through photographic and cinematic mediums. Film photography and music will be used to explore how to reimagine history as ‘Acid’ in nature and in doing so radically rethink the conditions of the past and produce a future which escapes neoliberal politics. \nBio: Joshua Whitaker is an artist\, writer\, lecturer and Arts Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded PhD researcher based at Central St Martins\, University of the Arts London. He was the BSA Art Researcher in Residence in 2023. \n7pm in-person at the Hellenic Centre in London \nFree | Bookings via Eventbrite or +44 (0)20 7563 9835

SUMMARY:Joshua Whitaker\, ‘Acid History‘
DESCRIPTION:Image Credit: Joshua Whitaker\, ‘Acid History’ film still (2023) \nJoshua Whitaker (University of the Arts London\, BSA Artist in Residence)\, ‘Acid History‘ \nAbstract:\n‘Acid History’ is neither a record of psychedelic culture nor a catalogue of LSD experience. ‘Acid’ is deployed within the seminar\, as Jeremy Gilbert has theorised it\, as an adjective— a term that is both mystical in its practice and adamant in its materialism 1 . It suggests a methodology of history which employs ‘weirdness’ (in its oldest sense\, of controlling fate\, becoming\, and bending) to radically rethink the\nconditions of the past\, and produce a future which escapes neoliberal politics. The seminar will link; St Paul\, the Delphic oracle\, fate\, the Weird Sisters\, puppets\, collective joy\, dance\, and a ‘spirit of place’ using film\, music\, performance\, and the conventions of a traditional lecture\, as Avery Gordon puts it\, ‘to consider a different way of seeing\, one that is less mechanical\, more willing to be surprised\, to link\nimagination and critique\, one that is more attuned to the task of "conjur[ing] up the appearances of something that [is] absent"’. 2 \nRegister here to attend IN PERSON:https://www.eventbrite.com/e/joshua-whitaker-acid-history-tickets-643556884967 \nRegister here to attend ONLINE:https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_jrtClyFrR6-ueVS-sIc_wA \nWednesday 31 May at 4pm (UK) / 6pm (Greece) \n

SUMMARY:Syma Tariq\, "Dreaming of Entopia: Constantinos Doxiadis in Pakistan"
DESCRIPTION:Source: Constantinos A. Doxiadis Archives© Constantinos and Emma Doxiadis Foundation \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nSyma Tariq (University of the Arts London / BSA Arts Residency holder)\, “Dreaming of Entopia: Constantinos Doxiadis in Pakistan” \nAbstract \nGreek architect and town planner Constantinos Doxiadis played an enormous role in the urban development of the nascent nation state of Pakistan\, most notably through his masterplan of its new capital city\, Islamabad\, in 1960. In this talk\, I will discuss the initial stages of a (slowly) developing research project about Doxiadis’ lesser known projects in the country\, gleaned from archival research in Athens while holding the BSA Arts Bursary in June/July 2020. This initial deep dive into private records brought up conflicting questions of ‘development’ and ‘belonging’\, as the universalistic and modernistic view of human settlements that Doxiadis championed met a distinctive moment of Pakistan’s history – where dreams of building a new\, modern nation state clashed with the influx of millions of refugees. This fallout of the 1947 Partition of British India is centred through a look at Doxiadis’ ‘minor’ projects\, namely the refugee colonies in the fringes of Karachi. \nMonday 16 November 5pm (UK) / 7pm (Greece) \nPlease register to participate in this event: \nhttps://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_aIucvBWoQSCIDttsDwiAwQ

SUMMARY:Onyeka Igwe: Scenes from the BSA Archive
DESCRIPTION: \nOnyeka Igwe is the 2019 BSA Arts Bursary holder and returns from a residency in Athens to share her encounters with the archive. Igwe researches the colonial\nimagination\, its knowledges and influence on the archive and then uses a\nmethodology\, critical proximity\, to create moving image works that attempt to activate archive material in other ways. She will share poetic snatches of her experiences at the BSA as well as outlining the methodology that roots both her artistic practice and historical research. \nProfessor Malcolm Quinn (UAL) will be in conversation with Igwe after a presentation. \nThe BSA Arts Bursary is organised in collaboration with Research at Camberwell\, Chelsea\, Wimbledon Colleges of Arts\, University of the Arts London. This event is free to attend and will be followed by light refreshments. There is a suggested voluntary donation of £15.
