SUMMARY:Beckett's Breath: Anti-theatricality and the Visual Arts - Dr Sozita Goudouna
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch and artistic interventions in the garden – performance\, screening\, panel discussion\n“Beckett’s Breath: Anti-theatricality and the Visual Arts” | Dr Sozita Goudouna\nThe British School at Athens\, in partnership with the British Council\, Edinburgh University Press and Nissos Academic Publishing\, hosts the Greek book launch of Dr. Sozita Goudouna’s book «Η Αναπνοή του Μπέκετ» (“Beckett’s Breath”). A panel discussion will be held with Prof Richard Gough (editor Performance Research Journal) Prof Pamela Karantonis (Head of Department\, Theater and Performance Goldsmiths University)\, Prof Nikos Navridis (Athens School of Fine Arts) and Dr Thomas Symeonidis (Athens School of Fine Arts). Artistic interventions include Maria Louizou’s “6 Breaths Per Minute” and “Desert Breath” by D.A.ST. Arteam\, Danae Stratou\, Alexandra Stratou\, and Stella Konstantinidis.\n\nThis survey is regarded as the first monograph on one of the shortest plays ever written. According to William Hutchings’ review at the Comparative Drama Conference Series 15\, Goudouna’s book is surely the most ever said about the least in the entire history of literary criticism.\n\n\nSamuel Beckett\, one of the most prominent playwrights of the twentieth century\, wrote a thirty-second playlet for the stage that does not include actors\, text\, characters or drama but only stage directions. Breath (1969) is the focus and the only theatrical text examined in this study\, which demonstrates how the piece became emblematic of the interdisciplinary exchanges that occur in Beckett’s later writings\, and of the cross-fertilisation of the theatre with the visual arts. The book attends to fifty breath-related artworks (including sculpture\, painting\, new media\, sound art\, performance art) and contextualises Beckett’s Breath within the intermedial and high-modernist discourse thereby contributing to the expanding field of intermedial Beckett criticism. \nFor more information on the book please visit: «Η Αναπνοή του Μπέκετ. Αντιθεατρικότητα και εικαστικές τέχνες» Nisos Press \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBSA Upper House Garden\, in-person only \n18:00-21:00 \nPlease register to attend: \nLoading… \n

SUMMARY:The Early Ottoman Peloponnese - A Study in the Light of an Annotated Editio Princeps of the TT10 – 1/14662 Ottoman Taxation Cadastre (ca. 1460 – 1463).
DESCRIPTION:The Early Ottoman Peloponnese – A Study in the Light of an Annotated Editio Princeps of the TT10 – 1/14662 Ottoman Taxation Cadastre (ca. 1460 – 1463).\n\nIn this book\, Georgios C. Liakopoulos presents a unique insight into late Byzantine Peloponnese society and its economy\, and how these were incorporated into the Ottoman Empire\, using as reference the cadastre compiled immediately after the Ottoman conquest. What makes this study imperative is the fact that no similar Byzantine document of the period has survived. The author offers a thorough analysis of the demography of the Peloponnese and its categorisation into urban/rural and sedentary/nomadic\, concentrating on the Albanians\, the second largest ethnic group after the Greeks. A detailed presentation of the level of agricultural production\, livestock\, fishing and commerce is illustrated with tables and charts. The book is complemented with a diplomatic edition of the transcribed Ottoman text and facsimiles of the cadastre.\nSpeakers:\nProfessor Francis Robinson (Royal Asiatic Society)\nProfessor Paraskevas Konortas (University of Athens)\nProfessor Georgia Katsouda (Academy of Athens)\nDr Georgios Liakopoulos (Max Planck Institute)

SUMMARY:A. Hobbs\, Plato’s Republic\, Ladybird Expert Series – 34
DESCRIPTION:A. Hobbs\, Plato’s Republic\, Ladybird Expert Series – 34 \nPlato’s Republic addresses questions of urgent concern in these troubled times.  How can we prevent democracies being subverted to tyrannies by cynical demagogues?  How can we protect truth from fake news and ‘alternative facts’?  And\, ultimately\, why do humans form societies and what is needed for them to flourish?  In this event Professor Angie Hobbs will read extracts from her recently published Plato’s Republic: a Ladybird Expert Book\, discuss why and how she wrote it and respond to questions from the audience.  Afterwards she will be available for signing.
