SUMMARY:Writing Greece: An evening with Sofka Zinovieff and Julian Hoffman
DESCRIPTION:In-conversation\nWriting Greece: An evening with Sofka Zinovieff and Julian Hoffman\nNeither Julian Hoffman nor Sofka Zinovieff are originally from Greece and yet they’ve both devoted a large part of their careers to writing and thinking about this country. Between them\, they’ve explored it in novels\, nonfiction\, short stories\, podcasts and essays. One lives in Athens\, the other in Prespa – but much connects them. Please join us for an evening of conversation that brings together these two acclaimed and award-winning authors around their shared fascination for their adopted homeland. They’ll talk about their latest books – Sofka’s Stealing Dad and Julian’s Lifelines – and how they’ve been inspired\, challenged and changed by writing about Greece. \nThis event will open the conference Mountains of Greece: Heritage narratives from the past for a sustainable future. \nSofka Zinovieff was born in London\, has Russian ancestry and lives in Athens. She has written about Greece as an anthropologist (with a PhD from Cambridge)\, a journalist and an author. Her latest novel is Stealing Dad and her other books include Eurydice Street: A Place in Athens\, and the novels Putney and The House on Paradise Street. Podcast documentary series: Athens Unpacked. www.sofkazinovieff.com @SofkaZinovieff \nAlthough he was born in the UK and grew up in Canada\, Julian Hoffman has lived for the past quarter of a century beside the Prespa lakes in northern Greece. Along with his new book\, Lifelines: Searching for Home in the Mountains of Greece\, he is the author of two previous titles. Irreplaceable: The Fight to Save our Wild Places was the Highly Commended Finalist for the Wainwright Prize for Writing on Global Conservation in 2020 and a Royal Geographical Society ‘Book of the Year’\, while The Small Heart of Things won both the 2012 AWP Award for Creative Nonfiction and the National Outdoor Book Award for Natural History Literature. He is currently working on a new book about the Aoos-Vjosa river system flowing through Greece and Albania. \nHybrid event \nTo attend in-person in Athens\, register HERE \nTo attend online via Zoom webinar\, register HERE

SUMMARY:Mosaics: an enduring imprint of materiality. Christina Nakou in conversation with Rebecca Sweetman
DESCRIPTION:Christina Nakou: creating a mosaic\, courtesy of the artist \nIn-conversation\nMosaics: an enduring imprint of materiality. Christina Nakou in conversation with Rebecca Sweetman\nBased on the ancient technique of mosaics\, the conversation between the Director of the BSA Prof Rebecca Sweetman (expert on ancient mosaics) and Visual Artist Christina Nakou approaches concepts such as making\, wear\, durability\, corporeality and transformation to highlight the importance of the inclusion of our senses in the daily experience of our “cosmos”. In 2025 and 2024\, she has been a Visiting Artist in the American Academy in Rome. In 2024 she presented THE RIVER installation at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki\, highlighting the importance of drinkable water. In 2023\, her work has been presented in the Venice Architecture Biennale\, within the “Bodies of Water” architecture exhibition hosted in the Greek Pavilion. SUMMARY:A poetry and spoken word performance by Vanessa Kisuule and Pavlina Marvin
DESCRIPTION:A poetry and spoken word performance by Vanessa Kisuule and Pavlina Marvin \nOn the occasion of the British Council’s 80th anniversary celebrations in Greece and of the UK being the Country of Honour at Public Book Awards\, the British Council in collaboration with Public Bookstores\, have invited Vanessa Kisuule and Pavlina Marvin to join forces on Wednesday 30 October\, at 19:00\, in the Penrose Library of the British School at Athens. The multi awarded poet and performer from Bristol and one of the most intriguing next generation voices in Athens\, will explore their private and public visions of 80 years ago and 80 years from now and perform poetically\, through spoken word a sample of their existing work. What does a woman poet-performer see in Greece\, the UK\, and the world\, 80 years ago from today? And what findings can a poetic archaeology of the future reveal about life\, nature\, and culture 80 years from now? The two poets will create a performative piece on this theme\, enriched and informed by their in situ meeting in Athens.\nThe event will be moderated by poet\, editor and critic\, Panayotis Ioannidis. \nEntrance from Ioanni Diamanti Patera 53\, Athens 106 76
