SUMMARY:Andrea Applebee\, "Sex\, Power\, and Poetry: Inspirations and Challenges from the Classics"
DESCRIPTION:Pudica by Cicek Tascioglu Beeby \nGreek Friends’ Event – poetry reading\nAndrea Applebee\, “Sex\, Power\, and Poetry: Inspirations and Challenges from the Classics”\nEvent Description: Let’s gather to speak to how these ways of relating shape each other. The language of the body and the language of the soul have long courted\, negotiated with\, and defied expressions of power\, inspired\, and witnessed. This chorus will be followed by an open discussion\, which artists working with different media are invited to participate in. \nIn-person only\, 6pm (Greece) \nBSA Upper House\, Souedias 52\, Athens. \nNo registration required for in-person attendance.

SUMMARY:Joshua Barley\,“Greek Folk Songs: from oral tradition to literary translation”
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Barley\,“Greek Folk Songs: from oral tradition to literary translation” \nAbstract \nThe Greek folk songs – dimotika tragoudia – make up one of the most important chapters in modern Greece’s musical\, linguistic\, and cultural history. Not only did these songs play a crucial role in forming the nation’s demotic language\, but they have been revered by Greece’s poets ever since they were first transcribed in the early 19th century. Josh Barley will guide us through this rich poetic corpus\, discussing their first life as oral tradition in Greek villages\, their transformation into written texts\, and\, finally\, their role in Greek nation-building. As a thoughtful translator of these songs in his collection Greek Folk Songs (Aiora Press\, 2022)\, he will consider their translation into English. Finally\, we will enjoy these songs in their appropriate context\, with singing & music from a celebrated folk musician! \nPlease register to attend IN PERSON via Eventbrite here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/595710735847 \nThursday April 6th at 18:00\, Upper House (Director’s Residence)

SUMMARY:Philip Kenrick: Cyrenaica: A Greek Pentapolis - but so much more
DESCRIPTION:  \nPhilip Kenrick is a classical archaeologist and pottery specialist\, who has worked in widely dispersed parts of the Mediterranean. He has been closely involved in the archaeology of Libya since 1971\, and studied the fine wares from a huge rescue excavation which took place in Benghazi in 1971-75. After being drawn into leading cultural tours of the country in 2005\, he felt impelled to provide tourists with respectable archaeological guidebooks. His Tripolitania was published in 2009 and Cyrenaica in 2013\, both by the Society for Libyan Studies. \nThe lecture will be followed by an informal reception. There is a suggested donation of £8.50 for Supporters of the BSA (£10.50 otherwise). Cheques should be made payable to the ‘British School at Athens’ and sent in advance to BSA\, 10 Carlton House Terrace\, London SW1Y 5AH. \nRSVP to Kate Smith: bsa@britac.ac.uk  /  BSA\, 10 Carlton House Terrace\, London SW1Y 5AH.

SUMMARY:Rosemary Jeffreys\, "Gilded wreaths from Phoinikas\, Thessaloniki"
DESCRIPTION:Ms Rosemary Jeffreys (University of Oxford)\, “Gilded wreaths from Phoinikas\, Thessaloniki” \nMs Jeffreys will present some unpublished gilded wreaths from Phoinikas\, Thessaloniki\, which date to the second quarter of the fourth century BC. These wreaths are in an extraordinary state of preservation\, having been placed in a sealed cist grave\, in which even some textiles were preserved. She will tell us what is known of the woman buried in one of the graves\, as well as what she has discovered about the wreaths in this group of graves. Rosemary will also explain how these wreaths fit into the wider context of Macedonian gilded wreaths\, which are mainly from the late fourth century. None of the Phoinikas wreaths is on public view\, because of their extreme fragility\, and she has been granted exceptional access to study this material.  She has also benefited enormously from discussion with the excavator\, Dr Maria Tsimbidou. She will be publishing these wreaths in an article co-authored with Dr Tsimbidou in 2019.\n\nThere is a suggested donation of £8.50 for supporters of the BSA (£10.50 for others). Booking is required. Please RSVP to the London Secretary\, Kate Smith: bsa@britac.ac.uk
