SUMMARY:Nicoletta Momigliano\, "Conversations with the Minoan 'Snake Goddesses'”
DESCRIPTION:Conversations with the Minoan “Snake Goddesses”\nProfessor Nicoletta Momigliano (University of Bristol) on behalf of the ‘The Many Lives of a Snake Goddess’ project team. \n(This lecture will take place in Greek) \nThis talk offers an introduction to the project ‘The Many Lives of a Snake Goddess: Diachronic\, Multicultural\, and Multisensory Perspectives’ (https://mlsg.squarespace.com/) a project spearheaded by Christine Morris (Trinity College Dublin)\, Nicoletta Momigliano (University of Bristol) and Ellen Adams (King’s College London) that involves doctoral students from various institutions\, colleagues from the Ashmolean Museum and the British School at Athens as well as several artists and writers. \nThe project focuses on two of the most iconic finds from Minoan Crete: the figurines of the ‘Snake goddess’ and her ‘votary’ discovered by Arthur Evans during he excavations at Knossos in 1903.  Ever since\, the figurines have beguiled not only archaeologists and other scholars concerned with past worlds\, but also modern artists\, writers\, psychoanalysts\, feminists\, fashion designers\, and followers of modern Paganism\, among many others – all of whom have re-imagined these objects for their own purposes. Yet\, despite their iconic status\, relatively few people realise that the figurines are problematic in many respects. Issues concerning these objects range from what they really looked like in Minoan times to what they signified and how they have been perceived and reimagined beyond archaeology.  Our project investigates all these issues and examines the general public’s experience of these figurines and of modern works inspired by them. \nThe talk accompanies a small exhibition in the Knossos Research Centre. \nThe event is organized by the British School at Athens in collaboration with the Knossos Cultural Association. \nFriday 26th July 2024\, 20.30. \nKnossos Research Centre\, Villa Ariadne\, Knossos \nFree entrance \n  \nΣυζητήσεις με τη μινωική «Θέα των Όφεων» \nΚαθηγήτρια Nicoletta Momigliano (University of Bristol) για λογαριασμό της ερευνητικής ομάδας «Οι πολλές ζωές μιας Θεάς των Όφεων».

SUMMARY:Dr Georgios Mouratidis (BSA)\, "Does ancient sport still matter?"
DESCRIPTION:Πόσο επίκαιρος είναι ο αρχαίος αθλητισμός;\nDr Georgios Mouratidis (BSA)\, “Does ancient sport still matter?” \n(This lecture will take place in Greek) \nObserved from a historical perspective\, doping is a relatively recent phenomenon that became increasingly widespread in sport after the 19th century and the beginning of modern Olympic Games. Today\, international institutions like WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) were formed to preserve the intrinsic values of sport\, such as fair play\, justice\, education\, and respect for rules and laws. Such values\, which are often referred to as the ‘spirit of sport’\, can be traced in the ancient Greek ethos of aretē. It was virtue (aretē) that rendered victory valuable\, not just to the athlete\, but more importantly to the community. Conversely\, athletes who sought external assistance or tried to buy victory were punished and derided. Drawing on a wide range of literary\, epigraphic\, and archaeological evidence\, this paper seeks to give a new interpretation to the ancient phenomenon of athletic nudity\, in the process emphasizing the close connection between victory and virtue. Athletic nudity symbolized agency: the idea that they were the primary cause of their performance\, and therefore\, worthy of the glory accorded to victors. Consequently\, the conceptual connection between victory and virtue in Antiquity is not only relevant\, but can also be fundamental to the modern spirit of Olympic Sport. \nThe event is organised in collaboration with the Cultural Association of Knossos. \nIn-person only lecture.
