DESCRIPTION:Bust of Pericles\, Roman copy\, Vatican Museums\, wikicommons \nBSA Friends’ lecture\nProfessor Paul Cartledge (AG Leventis Senior Research Fellow Clare College Cambridge)\, ‘Pericles: Statesman\, Demagogue\, Eccentric’\nAbstract: \nPericles ‘All-round Famous’ is one of the greatest ‘names’ of the ancient Greek world. His name has become a derivative adjective: ‘Periclean Athens’\, even ‘Periclean Greece’. But given the available evidence – literary (Thucydides\, Plutarch)\, epigraphical\, and material-cultural (the building programme) – have his overall achievement and legacy been correctly assessed? In this lecture using the same title as his recent book Paul Cartledge will re-examine his illustrious career under three main subtitular rubrics: statesman (did Thucydides get that right?)\, demagogue (was Pericles really so different from his rival would-be ‘leaders of the demos’?) and eccentric (just how odd were his public-facing career and private life?). \nBio: Paul Cartledge has published solo and jointly over 30 books\, the latest Pericles: Statesman\, Demagogue\, Eccentric (Reaktion Books\, 2026) in the series he edits ‘Great Lives of the Ancient World’. Prof. Cartledge first joined the BSA as a Student in 1970 and is a longstanding Friend. He is a Commander of the Order of Honour (Hellenic Republic) and an Honorary Citizen of Sparta. DESCRIPTION:Award-winning pamphlets \nPoetry Readings: Michael Marks Awards\nHasti (winner of the Poetry Pamphlet Award 2026) and Patrick Romero McCafferty (winner of the Environmental Poetry Pamphlet Award 2026)\nThe BSA is delighted to host the Michael Marks Awards and its winning poets who stay at the BSA for a week as part of the programme. This year’s poets in residence are Hasti\, winner of the Poetry Pamphlet Award 2026\, and Patrick Romero McCafferty\, winner of the Environmental Poetry Pamphlet Award 2026\, who will give readings at the BSA Upper House. \nAbout Hasti \nHasti is a poet and writer living in South East London. A member of the inaugural Southbank New Poets Collective and the Ledbury Poetry Critics\, they are the recipient of the 2023 White Review Poet’s Prize and the 2022 Queen Mary Wasafiri New Writing Prize for Poetry. Hasti has also co-written short sci-fi film DIGGING\, produced by Film4. Hasti hosts open mic and poetry night Fresh Lip\, and its sister show for Montez Press Radio\, Fresh Air. young\, dumb\, and full of poems is their first pamphlet. \nAbout Patrick Romero McCafferty \nPatrick Romero McCafferty’s poetry has appeared recently in Granta\, Wasafiri\, & the Irish Pages. ‘An August Work Party’\, an album with the band Anoraq\, came out in May 2026. He edits Wet Grain\, a magazine for land poetry. Patrick’s pamphlet\, Glass Knot Sun\, was published by ignitionpress in 2025. \n  \n  \nThe Michael Marks Awards for Poetry Pamphlets promote the pamphlet form and enable poets and publishers to develop and continue creating. Awarded annually\, they celebrate new work with prizes for: ‘Poetry Pamphlet’ (£5\,000) and ‘Publisher’ (£5\,000)\, ‘Illustration’ (£1\,000) and ‘Environmental Poet of the Year’ (£1\,000). SUMMARY:Roman Pottery in the South-Eastern Balkans: From Production to Distribution
DESCRIPTION:Conference\nRoman Pottery in the South-Eastern Balkans: From Production to Distribution\n\n\nThe conference focuses on local pottery production during the Roman period in the southern and south-eastern regions of the Balkan Peninsula\, particularly within the Roman provinces of Thrace\, Moesia Inferior\, Dacia\, and Macedonia. Across these regions\, numerous pottery workshops have already been identified\, producing substantial quantities of wheel-made tableware\, cooking vessels\, and storage containers\, often alongside traditional handmade pottery. The scale and variability of local production must have been considerable; in inland Thrace\, for instance\, the majority of pottery found in rural contexts was locally produced\, while imports were virtually negligible. \nHowever\, despite the prevalence of local pottery on many archaeological sites\, the number of dedicated studies on the subject remains disproportionately low. Even fewer comprehensive studies or specialized conferences address the production and distribution of local pottery. This conference therefore aims to provide an open forum for sharing and discussing various aspects of Roman pottery production in the southern and south-eastern Balkan Peninsula\, focusing on direct or indirect evidence of production as well as on investigating circulation patterns\, consumer preferences and patterns of consumption. \nThe chronological framework of the conference spans the Late Republic to the Imperial period\, approximately from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD. \n\n\n\nThe main topics are:\n\n\n\nTypology and chronology of various regional pottery groups\nProduction centres and their organization\nTechnological aspects of ceramic production\nPottery function and utilization\nPatterns and mechanisms of distribution\nEconomic\, social\, and cultural significance of pottery production and consumption\nThe application of scientific analyses to address any of the above issues\n\n\n\nThe submission for abstracts has now closed. SUMMARY:Artist in Residence lecture: Srinivas Surti
DESCRIPTION:Artist in Residence event\nSrinivas Surti (University of the Arts London) \nSrinivas Surti is an artist\, educator and doctoral researcher at Chelsea College of Arts\, University of the Arts\, London. His practice-based research explores cultural hybridity through relationships between image and object\, surface and depth\, using printmaking\, installation and performance to consider relief as a transcultural site of coexistence. In 2022\, he co-edited Cha\, a publication examining Brownness as an inclusive mode of cultural identification\, and in 2023 he participated in the International Doctoral School in Nida\, Lithuania. Srinivas completed an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in 2002\, where he received the Rootstein Hopkins Postgraduate Award\, and since then has exhibited widely across London and the UK. \nDuring the residency\, Srinivas will be in dialogue with the research community at the BSA to deepen his understanding of the pigments used in Greek polychromatic relief sculpture. Drawing on the movement and exchange of colour and pattern across ancient cultures\, he will develop a series of experimental printed reliefs on paper\, mylar\, and fabric. Combining printmaking with performative processes\, the works will explore the material qualities of lightness and shimmer while referencing the iconography of Indo-Greek relief\, which adapted Greek conventions of imagery\, and styles of drapery. By re-presenting shared traditions of colour\, form and pattern from a new perspective\, the work aims to evoke ideas of togetherness in the present. \nHybrid event \nRegistration links coming soon.

By Olaf Tausch – Own work\, CC BY 3.0\, \nBSA Friends’ lecture\nDr Huw Halstead (Dr Huw Halstead)\, ‘Loneliness and Solitude in the Colonels’ Greece\, 1967-1974’\nAbstract: \nIn this paper\, I offer a quiet history of the Colonels’ regime in Greece (1967-1974) by focusing on times and spaces in which people found themselves alone under dictatorial rule. Drawing on oral testimonies\, I explore both experiences of loneliness and practices of solitude. I discuss how dictatorial regimes cultivate popular loneliness both directly (through means such as exile\, imprisonment\, or solitary confinement) and indirectly (by polluting the social bonds that tie people together). At the same time\, I also demonstrate the capacity for bottom-up practices of solitude to push back against this imposed loneliness\, to create distance between the individual and dictatorial power\, and even to strengthen social bonds despite dictatorial interference. \nBio: Dr Huw Halstead is Lecturer in Public History in the School of History\, Classics\, and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on memory\, public history\, and everyday life.
