Archive donation – Penrose’s passport
We are thrilled have recently received for our Archive of one of Francis C. Penrose’s (the BSA’s first Director) passports from his travels in 1845! This sleek bound document seems to cover the period of his Worts’ Travelling Bachelorship from April – August 1845 with an additional documents inside such as the 1844 travel document of Christian Charles Josias von Bunsen (1791-1860), the Prussian envoy in London and a great friend of Francis’ uncle, Dr Thomas Arnold who was instrumental in setting up the Prussian-Anglican bishopric in Jerusalem which lasted from 1841-1886; and a “foreigner frightener” document issued in Athens in 1900 which allowed the holder to pass freely on travels in the Ottoman Empire.

We are very grateful to Mrs Carol Turner of Oxford, UK (Maj. Gen John Hubert Penrose’s granddaughter) and Colin Orr, author of the 2 volume history of the Penrose family, for this amazing donation as well as to Colin for the donation of his books to the BSA Library. We would also like to thank Dr Estelle Strazdins (The Australian National University and BSA Member) for its safe transport to Athens!
