The Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies (SPHS) and the British School at Athens (BSA) invite applications for the role of co-editor of Archaeological Reports (AR).
About Archaeological Reports
Archaeological Reports is published by the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies and the British School at Athens, for their subscribers. ‘Archaeology in Greece’, compiled annually, is the only account of recent archaeological work in Greece published in English. It is supplemented each year by a regional report on archaeology and research from other parts of the ancient Greek and Byzantine world: South Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, Albania, Cyprus, Asia Minor and the Black Sea are covered regularly. Thematic overviews on topics of interest to scholars of Greek antiquity are also covered.
The Role
The co-editor is responsible for the high academic standard and timely publication of the journal. Tasks include:
- Commissioning high-quality articles from researchers in the field;
- Writing any editorial material, compiling the contents list and selecting the front cover for each volume;
- Receiving and marking up proofs, liaising with the publisher, and giving final approval for publication;
- Reporting to and collaborating with the SPHS Publications Committee.
The co-editor will also contribute to the strategic development of the journal and represent it within the academic community.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should:
- Be of established prominence in the field of the history and archaeology of Greece and the wider region, preferably with a specialism in the Classical or Hellenistic periods;
- Demonstrate excellent attention to detail, have good editorial skills and have enough Greek and ancient Greek to undertake the copy-editing and proof reading of Greek content;
- Possess strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage time and meet deadlines reliably;
- Be capable of working effectively with others, including publisher, copy-editor, typesetter, fellow editors, reviewers, and authors;
- Exhibit the diplomacy and firmness necessary for constructive engagement with contributors, reviewers and other stakeholders.
Honorarium
The role carries an annual honorarium of £500.
