PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND EVENTS OFFICER (ATHENS-BASED; 0.7 FTE)
The British School at Athens (BSA) is the UK’s research hub in the humanities and social sciences in Greece and its wider Balkan, European, Mediterranean and Levantine contexts. It conducts, facilitates and promotes research of international excellence in all periods – from the Palaeolithic to the present – and across all humanities and social science disciplines, as well as offering targeted courses to develop the next generation of researchers and academics in those fields. Based in Athens (52 Souedias Street, GR 10676) the BSA is one of 8 British International Research Institutes (BIRIs) which receive funding through the British Academy. We are now in search of a part-time (0.7 FTE) Public Engagement and Events Officer to be based at our Athens premises and to work closely with staff based in Athens and London, as well as with our Development team. This job offers career development opportunities in public engagement and events programming, and for work with an experienced and dynamic team.
Job Responsibilities
- Developing Public Engagement initiatives, both in-person and online, to attract new and diverse audiences. Administering a programme of networking, social and educational events designed to engage Supporters, potential donors, alumni and Friends of the BSA, and interested parties; coordinating an events programme, brochure, and managing in-person and online events; This includes:
- events programming, budgeting and promo
- guest list management
- event delivery
– catering, delivery (e.g. dual), recording and photography - event follow-up
- Public Engagement:
- Organising tours at the BSA
- Organising an annual cycle of Supporter events (lectures, dinners, receptions, museum and gallery tours) in Athens and in London;
- Coordinating with external parties on events (including filming)
- Art and Poetry Liaison:
- Liaising with University of the Arts London about upcoming and in-progress artists in residence and with Marks Foundation for Poets in Residence each year.
- Helping coordinate with Artist in Residence and Poets in Residence, including recommendations for museum and gallery visits, art shops, suppliers and networking. Creating schedule of visits for one- week Poets in Residence with Marks Foundation.
- Communications
- Facilitating the communication of BSA research activity to the general public, through e.g. social media posts on research activity (reworded for general public) and newsletter
- Managing the BSA’s mailing list and producing regular event and Development communications (e-Bulletin and Stratigraphical museum update);
- Coordinating the production of the Annual BSA Newsletter in collaboration with the Director
- Coordinating the BSA’s contribution to the British Academy regular updates
- Being responsible for developing and delivering the BSA’s social media presence.

Profile
You will be proactive and highly organised, providing support in organising, implementing and operating the BSA’s public engagement programme, liaising with BSA staff in Athens and London across the full range of public engagement activities, including handling calls and correspondence, designing and producing relevant publications, managing events, coordinating data gathering, maintaining records appropriately, and handling social media.
You will be capable of working both independently and as a member of a team, with the confidence to engage with people of all ages and backgrounds. You will have at least a BA or BSc and a broad interest in the work of the BSA as covered by its mission statement, combined with experience in Public Engagement and Event organization. An aptitude for working with different software solutions (e.g. donor management) and willingness to learn new tech skills is desirable.
Essential
- Graduate or postgraduate qualification in a field related to the BSA’s mission statement;
- Native or near-native competence in both Greek and English;
- A demonstrable track record in successfully planning, implementing and evaluating Public Engagement activities;
- Excellent project management skills;
- Demonstrable experience of high-quality communication to specialist and non-specialist audiences;
- Experience in the use of social media;
- Both oral and written communication skills appropriate to a variety of contexts;
- Ability to plan and prioritise work to agreed deadlines;
- Demonstrable personal commitment to developing interpersonal skills, with an understanding of impact on individuals, respecting and valuing diversity.
Desirable
- An aptitude for working with different software solutions and willingness to learn new tech skills;
- Familiarity with the BSA;
The annual gross salary will be €28,000 (0.7 FTE) pro rata plus group health insurance. You will be based at our premises in Athens (52 Souedias Street, 10676). The role may involve occasional travel to the UK (for which all reasonable expenses will be paid). Attendance at BSA events is expected and working hours will reflect this.
The BSA will need to validate the successful applicant’s right to work in Greece.
