Whether you’re looking to build specialist skills, enhance your teaching practice, or deepen your understanding of the ancient world, the BSA provides a unique setting and unparalleled academic resources.
Amazing and encouraging learning environment. Very supportive and positive! Thank you!
Communicating Archaeology, January 2024.
This course has been one of the best decisions I made, personally and professionally
Byzantine Archaeology and History, July 2024.
Designed to complement university programmes, these intensive courses offer specialist training in subjects like ceramic petrology, epigraphy, ancient numismatics, and more. Participants gain access to the BSA’s world-class facilities — including the Fitch Laboratory for Science-based Archaeology and the Knossos, with its Stratigraphical Museum housing pottery from over a century of excavations in the region — as well as direct engagement with Greek material culture
Practical demonstration of squeezing and photography were useful to have for future projects (Greek Epigraphy 2024)
I particularly enjoyed the variety of guest lecturers and visits to collections since it gave many different perspectives on the different areas of numismatics….. I enjoyed the process of exploring a coin from scratch and presenting it to the group (Greek Numismatics, 2024)
I especially enjoyed the experimental manufacture of the clay tablets in Linear B. It afforded capital insight into the materiality of the clay, and I will be implementing these in my academic research (Linear B, 2024)

Our undergraduate programmes are designed to complement university teaching and to expand the range of knowledge and skills which students can then bring to bear in the final years of their degrees. Since 1973, our flagship Undergraduate Summer School offers a deep dive into the history, art, and topography of ancient Greece. Students visit iconic sites across Athens, Crete, and mainland Greece, developing critical skills and often taking their first step toward a future in research or academia. Our courses undergraduate are restricted to students studying at UK universities.
All the lecturers were incredibly dedicated to not only academic stimulation but also of ensuring the safety of students, and it made it easy to concentrate on learning.
(Summer School, 2025)
All of the lecturers we met we so approachable and clearly excited to talk and discuss their work, and openly accepted any and all questions. They were also very good at making adjustments when needed (museums/ sites being closed, etc.) and communicating it effectively.
(Summer School, 2025)
The course was really great and we saw an incredible amount of important sites in just one week. The staff were really helpful and welcoming and it was great getting to learn from them.
(The Ancient City of Athens, 2024)

We run specially curated programmes for UK and Greece-based school teachers, supporting the teaching of Ancient History, Archaeology and Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A-Level. These courses include site visits, lectures, and seminars, helping teachers bring classical subjects vividly to life in the classroom.
The teacher course at the BSA was a unique opportunity for me to visit Athens (I had never been before) and take my subject knowledge to a higher level. My degree was mainly focused on language, and Roman history where I studied history, so I am mostly self-taught for the Greece and Persia module which I teach at A-level. I felt confident about my subject knowledge beforehand, but I feel that I am now equipped to share much deeper subject knowledge, as well as more general knowledge on Greek art, architecture and culture, with my students. The course has also inspired me to read more widely around the subject, and I know that the enthusiasm I now feel for this course will rub off on my students. (Teachers Course, 2016)
