BSA Travel awards

The British School at Athens is delighted to offer three travel awards to students and artists based in the UK, whose work is broadly connected to the mission statement of the BSA.

Candidates should have a clear plan of how they will spend their time in Greece. This might involve (but is not limited to) using the BSA library, accessing the BSA collections, visiting museums and sites, or attending conferences and events. The award will also allow the researcher to develop contacts in Athens, both in the Greek academic community and among the foreign schools and institutes, assisted by the Assistant Director and Director. Preference may be given to candidates who have not visited Greece before, and who have no access to other sources of funding. Awards should be taken up by the end of the academic year 2025/2026.

Scholarships will cover:

  • One return flight to Greece (up to £300)
  • One month’s membership of the British School at Athens, granting full access to all BSA facilities and a museum pass for free access to archaeological sites and museums in Greece.
  • Ten days of accommodation in the BSA hostel. (The stay in Greece can be extended at the candidate’s own expense)

More specifically, we offer the following awards:

Testimonials

The BSA Art Award residency provided an exceptional opportunity for me to dedicate time and energy to expand my practice. Throughout the residency, I conducted in-depth research at the BSA Archive, allowing me to thoroughly analyse, reflect, and speculate on the historical current and future relationships between researchers and viewers – former recipient, 2024

As the recipient of the Vronwy Hankey Memorial Travel Award for Pre-Doctoral Students, I spent just under three weeks in Greece, ten days of which were at the BSA, four days in Sparti, and the remaining four days independently in Athens…The opportunity to research at the BSA has been invaluable to my research. – former recipient, 2023

My time at the School was an unforgettable journey, and I hope to return soon – former recipient, 2023
