Aspects of the Political Philosophy of the British Idealist Philosopher Bernard Bosanquet

Dr Stamatoula Panagakou (University of Cyprus), “Aspects of the Political Philosophy of the British Idealist Philosopher Bernard Bosanquet”

Bernard Bosanquet (1848-1923) was one of the most important British Idealist philosophers. Author of numerous books which cover topics from logic, metaphysics and aesthetics to ethics, religion and political philosophy, and of more than a hundred articles and book reviews, Bosanquet developed a holistic approach to socio-political theorization, defended the moral view of politics, society and the state, and reflected on the relation between individual self-realization and the common good. In this talk, which is suitable for both scholars and a more general audience, we will discuss central themes from Bosanquet’s philosophy such as the metaphysics of the self, the idea of ethical citizenship, and the ethical system of the state.
