John Ellis Jones Papers – Archive intern project
Over the past two months, Jorge Torres Hernández of the University of Carlos III (Madrid, Spain), has been in the BSA Archive undertaking his practicum as part of his MA in Archives programme.
Jorge’s mission was to first inventory the John Ellis Jones Papers, which were recently sent to the BSA by his family. These papers consisted of Ellis Jones’ excavation records and research on various sites (Dema, Vari, Knossos, and Kostoureika and Keramidia in the Elli Valley) from the 1950s until he passed away in 2023. After doing a first appraisal to separate the collection into Personal Papers and Excavations Records, Jorge then focused on the archival arrangement of the Agrileza Excavation Records. Ellis Jones excavated at Agrileza from 1977-1983 and later in 1995-97.
During that time he also studied the nearby silver-mines in the Laurion area. In addition to the invaluable excavation records in this collection, it also includes beautiful reconstruction drawings made by John Ellis Jones himself of the sites he was working on. Jorge has made a great start in revealing John Ellis Jones’ amazing legacy!
