BSA Arts Researcher in Residence 2026
Srinivas Surti
We are very pleased to announce that the BSA Arts Researcher in Residence (BSA/UAL partnership) for 2026 has been offered to Srinivas Surti!
Srinivas Surti is an artist, educator and doctoral researcher at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts, London. His practice-based research explores cultural hybridity through relationships between image and object, surface and depth, using printmaking, installation and performance to consider relief as a transcultural site of coexistence. In 2022, he co-edited Cha, a publication examining Brownness as an inclusive mode of cultural identification, and in 2023 he participated in the International Doctoral School in Nida, Lithuania. Srinivas completed an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in 2002, where he received the Rootstein Hopkins Postgraduate Award, and since then has exhibited widely across London and the UK.
During the residency, Srinivas will be in dialogue with the research community at the BSA to deepen his understanding of the pigments used in Greek polychromatic relief sculpture. Drawing on the movement and exchange of colour and pattern across ancient cultures, he will develop a series of experimental printed reliefs on paper, mylar, and fabric. Combining printmaking with performative processes, the works will explore the material qualities of lightness and shimmer while referencing the iconography of Indo-Greek relief, which adapted Greek conventions of imagery, and styles of drapery. By re-presenting shared traditions of colour, form and pattern from a new perspective, the work aims to evoke ideas of togetherness in the present.
