Research Awards

This page introduces the full range of Research Awards offered by the British School at Athens (BSA). We support ambitious projects in archaeology, history, art, and the wider humanities at every career stage. Whether you are an undergraduate planning your first research trip, a postgraduate or early-career scholar designing a field, lab, or archival project, or an established academic seeking targeted support for specialised work, these awards provide practical funding, institutional affiliation, and access to world‑class resources in Greece and at Knossos.

We provide targeted Research Awards to support specialized projects like fieldwork, analysis, and publication across Greece and Cyprus. These grants are designed to assist researchers at all career stages with access to BSA resources in Athens and Knossos. All Research Awards.

The Myrto Georgakopoulou Award
Supports PhD students or early-career scholars in Aegean archaeology, focusing on archaeometallurgy or ceramic analysis.
The Elizabeth Catling Memorial Fund for Archaeological Draughtpersonship
Supports excellence in archaeological drawing, including the preparation of finished drawings for publication. Its aim is to help BSA members to improve their standards of draughtspersonship and also enable the preparation of a larger number of drawings, of higher quality, than might otherwise have been possible.
The Hector and Elizabeth Catling Bursary
Provide financial assistance to members of the BSA whose current research in Greek lands lies within any area covered by the BSA’s mission statement.
The Hector and Elizabeth Catling Doctoral Award
For UK HEI doctoral students studying any aspect of Greece and the Greek world as defined in the BSA’s mission statement.
The John Morrison Memorial Fund for Hellenic Maritime Studies
It supports research into all branches of Hellenic maritime studies of any period.
Non-Stipendiary Research Associateship
Supports research affiliation without stipend (details via BSA).
The Knossos Donated Fund
Promotes research into prehistoric Knossos by making grants towards the expenses of research projects.
The Knossos Research Fund
Promotes research into, and knowledge of, Knossos in all aspects and across all periods, through supporting specific projects and contributing to the infrastructure at Knossos for research.
The Richard Bradford McConnell Fund for Landscape Studies
Assist research in the interaction of place and people in Greece and Cyprus at any period. All disciplines of the arts, humanities and sciences (or any combination of them) are eligible.
The Vronwy Hankey Memorial Fund for Aegean Studies
Funds Aegean studies research, especially the prehistory of the Aegean and its connections with the East Mediterranean.
Vronwy Hankey Memorial Travel Award for Pre-Doctoral Students
Travel support for pre-doctoral students studying any aspect of Greece and the Greek world as defined in the BSA’s mission statement.
Travel Award for Artists
One travel award for UK-based artists (generally defined), whose work is broadly connected to the mission statement of the BSA.
